Ok, we have in fact been here for a while now. But we’ve been busy—making way too many trips to Ikea and enjoying the nearly nonstop sunshine and blue skies since we arrived. (No, that’s not a joke.) It’s been a pretty intense two months. Moving really is a lot of work. I had focused on the packing up as being the hardest part, but of course getting settled in has its own challenges.
Our container full of furniture and rugs, clothes, kitchenware, bedding, books, random junk (they packed our half-used roll of aluminum foil, which admittedly has come in handy), and way too many toys sailed into Antwerp and ended up arriving at our doorstep on June 25, the day after we did. It made for a pretty eventful couple of days, but it did seem better to get it over with all at once than camp out in a basically empty house. (Frank had already been living here like a monk for eights weeks: a single mattress on the floor, couch, TV, and Nespresso machine. A monk who likes good coffee.) Just like on the Brooklyn side, the movers were absolute pros. Its feels somehow unfair that what took endless, agonizing hours to organize and pack—over weeks and weeks and with the help of some of the best friends a girl could ask for—is unloaded in a matter of three hours.
